Common mistakes retailers make with their security

Here at Silver Wolf we have identified a number of common mistakes retailers make when it comes to their security. Here’s our list of the top five.

Not checking referrals from other retailers

Often retailers choose a security consultant based on their website and initial conversation. But it is wise to ask for the contact details of other retailers who they have worked with previously and to follow those up as a reference check. They will be in the best position to recommend whether you should or shouldn’t commit to using that particular security consultant.

Not undergoing a thorough risk assessment

Without a comprehensive risk assessment you will struggle to identify all the areas that present a security risk to the property. Here at Silver Wolf we have a detailed process that allows us to systematically assess what needs to be done and where.  This avoids a scatter gun approach where vital areas are sure to be missed.

Not considering the scope of their CCTV system

There is no point having a CCTV system installed if the cameras do not cover the areas where perpetrators are likely to go on the property or in the store. We can help you assess where in the store the cameras need to be positioned for maximum coverage. The clearer the images of the criminals, the more chance there will be of a conviction – acting as a deterrent to others.

Skimping in an alarm system

There are many alarm systems on the market and we can help you identify a system that is best for your particular situation. Our advice is not to skimp here – as these days you can get a good system for a good price. And don’t just think that by having an alarm case on the wall that will deter criminals. Make sure it is turned on every time there is no-one on the premises.

Not getting the lighting right

Lighting is another area that we feel retailers do not take enough advice on. Entrances and exits need to be lit to deter intruders and to reassure staff leaving in the dark. You may also decide to have timers on to light the store at different times to minimise security risks. Lighting around bushes, walls, and trees just outside a premises could also be option to highlight places where criminals might loiter as they case your store.
