Five reasons why access control systems are better than traditional locks

Increasingly, businesses are choosing to replace their traditional door locks with modern access control systems. Installing a digital keyless entry system of this kind means that one simple key fob or access control card can allow personnel to gain entry through any number of doors or gates.

Here’s five more reasons why a growing number of companies have chosen to install an access control system:

1 – All is not lost

If a business is using traditional locks and a member of staff loses a key, they are left in a quandary. To ensure that security is maintained the business has the option to replace all locks that can be opened by the key or take the risky chance that the key hasn’t fallen into the wrong hands.

With an access control system, the access control card or fob is simply barred from use and a replacement is issued to the relevant person.

2 – Less cost and hassle

The cost and time spent replacing locks in the event of a lost key is considerably more than what is takes to bar an access card or fob. A few clicks on the PC and security is immediately restored when a fob is barred – there is no need to wait for a locksmith to arrive or to pay out for new locks.

3 – A full audit trail

An additional security benefit of using an access control system is that in the event of an incident businesses can track which card or fob was used at a certain time. The system provides firms with a complete audit trail of who went where and when.

4 – Timed access

A digital access control system gives businesses far more control over the hours that personnel can enter premises. Timed access is easy to set up with the system, in stark contrast to a traditional key and lock which can be used at any time of day or night, whether the business owner likes it or not.

5 – Alarm control

Access control systems can be integrated with a business’s intruder alarm system, so that authorised users deactivate the alarm when they arrive, and unauthorised users can’t open the door. This level of security control does not exist if a business is still using a traditional key and lock.
